in Grief,One I Love

One month ago today, I lost my dearest love, Paul, a man with one of the brightest, strongest spirits and finest, funniest minds that I have ever known.

I don’t have the words to say how much I miss him.

According to our tradition, there are several stages in the mourning process, lasting for seven days, thirty days, and (for a parent) eleven months.

The seven day period is clearly the time of most intense mourning, but that first month – during which the essential activities of daily life are resumed – is no cakewalk. And that first year will be full of reminders.

Reminders are, especially in the long haul, a good thing. You will be reminded of how much you miss Paul, and that will ache. But eventually the sweet memories overtake the pain of loss, making it easier to bear.

Just know that you have friends who are thinking of you… even if they’re friends you’ve never met.
