green: \grēn\; adjective: immature in age or judgment; untrained; inexperienced: a green worker.

This year, for the first time, we planted a garden. In our front yard. We dug up a patch of what passes for grass chez nous, put together a couple of raised beds from kits, and planted them with both seed and starts. And then we waited for sunshine.

Finally, it’s August, and the sun is putting in an appearance almost daily. Our three cherry tomato plants are covered in small green orbs. Our three tomatillo plants have set only one husk-covered fruit. (What am I doing wrong? Or is it just this year’s weather?) And Paul’s snow peas, planted as seed much later than the recommended date (oops!), have twined most of the way up their bamboo teepee, flowered, and begun to make tiny snow peas.

We’re growing food! It feels almost as much a miracle as getting the first eggs from our chickens last year.

I tried tomatoes and red bell peppers in large containers. So far some little tomatoes and one red bell pepper…. I thought we would have more with all the heat, but they do taste good.
