While walking through the farmers market today, I spotted a small wooden music box in the window of one of my favorite local toy stores. Atop the box stood a Christmas tree, a small child and Santa Claus, all brightly painted. From the bottom of the box to the top of the Christmas tree, the toy was about four inches tall. It was charming… so festive, so old-fashioned.
I went into the shop, and found another of the music boxes among a collection of tiny German handcarved animals. Cradling it in one hand, I turned the child-sized wooden crank with the other. The little Christmas tree rotated, and the melody of O Tannenbaum played in tinny, percussive music-box tones. I was enchanted. I turned the box over to check the price… and set the dear wee thing back on the shelf.
Isn’t it sweet?

I know exactly which store you mean. We love it there. But so expensive!
