small joys: 6

1. New windows installed in our bedroom today! The old windows — 101 years old — were crooked, and therefore drafty. When the wind blew, we could see our curtains move… and yes, that was with the windows closed. The new windows are double-paned, with argon between the panes and low-E coating on the exterior. What all that energy-speak means is that the new windows are way better insulated than the old windows, and perhaps as well insulated as the walls in which they are installed. No more curtains blowing in the wind; when they move now, it’ll be the cats behind them.

2. Another thing about our new windows? They’re much quieter than the old ones. The next time one of our neighbors has a loud party, I bet I won’t be able to understand the lyrics of the music they put on at 3 a.m. Less wind noise, too.

3. They’re pretty, too, our new windows. Nicely painted, with dark hardware. Now we just need to paint the old trim around them to match.

Nice and cozy! I like your bed, too. Our brick house is a bit drafty but a bit goes a long way in this weather: tonight, blizzard warning and 19 below. All I’ve got to say is my plane better leave for Florida tomorrow. I think I’ll go make some chili- I saw a good recipe around here somewhere…
