Some days, writing comes easily. Your words dance across the page or screen, twirling fully formed thoughts into elegant sentences. Narratives arc gracefully, floating in a warm, clear light.
Other days — days when you have stories to tell, and ideas to explore — the words do not come. Or those that do, trip over their own feet, and fall flat.
Other days, trying to write is like feeling your way out of the darkness… only to find that the light is blinding. Other days, you’re just not able to see.

I don’t imagine that the First Nations people who carved the life-sized human face into this totem pole were thinking about writing, but tonight, the image looked like writer’s block to me. This is one of an impressive collection of totems in the small town of Duncan, on Vancouver Island.
If you’re coming here for the first time from Holidailies, welcome! You’ve arrived a few days into my bloggy advent calendar; feel free to catch up on days 1, 2, 3 and 4.
