Day 2: Long ride home

in Musings

When I left the office, at the end of a fairly productive day, it was completely dark and a little misty out. I walked to the bus stop, arriving just as my first bus pulled up.

As I rode uptown, the bus filled with people. And the mist turned to rain. I could see people on the sidewalks opening their umbrellas. My umbrella was in the hall closet at home. My second umbrella was in a drawer at the office. Grrrr.

Now I could tell you how my bus ride home became a comedy of errors: how that bus didn’t let me off where it should have, and how buses roared past me twice as I ran the last few feet to bus stops, and how the rain came down harder the closer I got to home. I could tell you, but I don’t know that I could make the telling of it any more fun for you than the living of it was for me, and besides, those details aren’t really the point of the story.

I will tell you that, by the time I climbed the steps onto our front porch, I was wet. Not dripping, because wool absorbs a lot of water, but wet. And irritated. I imagine I looked like a cat just out of a bath. You know that look, right?

Paul heard me coming up the steps onto the porch, and came to open the front door. And, seeing my angry wet cat look, he hurried me into the house, and helped me shed my sodden woolens, and listened to my tale of commuting woe. Then he went into the kitchen, and came back with his hands behind his back. He said, “I bought something today that might make you feel better.” And he pulled out a shiny cardboard box of cookies. Not just any cookies…

peppermint jojos

Trader Joe’s Peppermint Jojo’s. An oreo-type chocolate sandwich cookie, with crushed peppermint candy in the cream filling. These are just about the only storebought cookies that I’ll eat. And they’re only available in December.

I hugged Paul, and opened the box.

Oooh, I had these for the very first time last night. What a great way to recover from bus woes!

It looks like Paul knows exactly how to raise your spirits! Sorry that your commute was bad but I bet those cookies wouldn’t have tasted half as good without it being that way.

Our Trader Joe’s is over the bay in Newport News… but when Nyssa gets home, I know she will be making a run over there… would this count as local?

My favorite Christmas cookie is something Mom calls a “sand tart”. Nyssa’s is Mom’s gingerbread men. If there are cookies this year, she and I will have to make them.

We did get four locally grown pumpkins and have cooked three and frozen them for pies later. This year we bought a white pumpkin (no other name given), a cheese pumpkin, a striped Cushaw and a large Fairy tale variety. Of course I saved the seeds….
