Day 19: Snowbound breakfast

To say that we’ve been snowbound is technically an overstatement. We’re able to get out of the house, and we’ve done so a few times since the snow began falling yesterday. Walking in falling snow is delightful; we crunched our way over to Queen Anne Avenue yesterday, and stopped on our way home to have lunch (with everyone else in our neighborhood!) at the 5-Spot.

While we can get out and walk around the neighborhood, it seems we’re pretty much stuck on top of our hill. Today, all four of the bus routes that serve the top of Queen Anne were canceled. We don’t have chains or snow tires for our car, and we’ve both had enough experience driving in snowy climes to know better than to venture farther than the local grocery store. Sure, we could walk (or slide) down the hill, but then we’d have to climb it, in snow. I did that several years ago, and don’t care to repeat the adventure.

honey, brandy, pearsOnce Paul and I determined that neither of us would be leaving for work this morning, I made us a special snow day breakfast:Dutch babies. We had several d’Anjou pears ripening on the counter, and I thought they’d be a luscious topping for the pancakes, sauteed with a little butter, honey (the first harvest from the hives my boss got this summer) and Oregon pear brandy. While the babies baked and I sauteed pears, Paul made us another round of coffee. We ate breakfast on our living room sofa, tucked under our down lap duvets, listening to the radio. I could get used to mornings like this.

Look at that puffed eggy deliciousness! The pears were delicious, tender and not too sweet.

The pancakes look delicious, but I absolutely love the ingredient photos. Just a beautiful combination of shapes and colors.

We live on the top of Capitol Hill. During snowy weather it is especially great to be in a walkable neighborhood. Yesterday Matthew and I went out for a great lunch at Kingfish Cafe.

Mmm. We call them “fat babies” in our household, for reasons I don’t recall, but mine never end up quite so puffy. Care to share the recipe?

Laurie: Thanks! I enjoyed taking the ingredients photo. And I’d happily walk to Kingfish in the snow.

ggp: Yum indeed… but I’ll be happy when the snow’s all gone.

Janeen: You know I’ll bake them whenever you visit, if only for your reaction!

Dad: I’ll make them for you when I’m next there.

kat: I use Molly’s recipe from Orangette. From my experience, room temp. eggs and milk/cream make for puffier babies.
