I woke this morning to the sound of thunder. Lightning and thunder are rare in Seattle, it was 5:30 in the morning, and I’d been asleep just a moment before, so I didn’t realize at first what had awakened me. As the boom rumbled on and on, I asked Paul if it was thunder, and he said yes, that he’d seen the flash just before I woke up. And, by the way, it was snowing. As I lay wondering about what might cause snow and thunder at the same time, the sky outside our window lit up again. Out of decades-old habit, I counted in my head: one one thousand, two one thousand, three one — boom! The thunder cracked, then rolled on for a couple of seconds. Two to three miles away, that lightning, if the rule I learned as a child is correct. I curled closer to Paul, and went back to sleep.

By the time we went out for a walk this afternoon, our neighborhood was blanketed in snow.

I’ve never heard of thunder and snow until this storm.
Love the photo. That looks like snowball fight snow.
I was awake for the thundersnow, too! I looked outside to see if there were any accompanying unicorns, but alas, no.
What totally bizarre weather we’ve been having!
Thunder, lightning AND snow. That is an unusual combination. But I’m glad you got some real snow and a gorgeous holiday photo.

I think the thunder must have been what awakened Chloe (which made her nervously pace to wake us up) yesterday morning, but it didn’t wake the humans in the house. The snow is beautiful, though! (Eeeeee, snow!)
How strange, but neat! I looked it up and found this about it in your area: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28300424
