Going, going…

November 19th, 2008 by Kimberly

Remember when I said that I was going to get rid of my car? Within a month? Well, today, 5 1/2 months and 1600+ miles later, I did it… sort of.

The little teal Prizm is still sitting in our driveway. But tonight I started the process that will lead to ours being a one-car household. First, I checked with Paul to make sure that he still agreed, lo these many months later, that getting rid of my car was a good idea. (We’ve been practicing sharing his Saab for a couple of months… but we had my car available when sharing was inconvenient.) Then, I filled out the Vehicle Donation Form on the YWCA’s website. (The car isn’t worth much, and we didn’t want the hassle of selling it, so we decided to donate it. The YWCA of Seattle helps many thousands of local women and children each year, and is a client of mine, so it’s going to them.) Within a few days, I’ll find out whether the YWCA wants the car (which they would auction). If they take it, they’ll tow it away in a week or two. I’ll file a notice of sale with the state, and notify our insurance company to take the Prizm off our automobile coverage.

And that will be it: we’ll have one car. And our experiment in car sharing will really begin.

Congratulations and good luck! I am a little envious of your terrifically walkable neighborhood. I’ve had great experiences with Zipcar the few times I’ve used them, too.
