One Local Summer: Week 13

September 2nd, 2008 by Kimberly

During the last week of OLS, I was so busy preserving the late summer’s local bounty (roasting tomatoes, making lemon balm syrup, cooking peach butter) that I didn’t cook and document an entirely local meal. Were any of our meals entirely local? What did we eat, anyway? It’s been that kind of week… until the weekend.

One Local SummerOn Saturday, Paul and I drove to Vancouver, BC, to attend the wedding of a couple of friends. We stayed at the Sylvia Hotel, a historical building in the West End on English Bay. Just a block from the Sylvia is Raincity Grill, which is known for its “farm to table local cuisine”. Among the options available to diners, Raincity offers a 100-Mile Tasting Menu, featuring meat, dairy and produce from British Columbia producers. We didn’t have an evening available to have dinner at Raincity, so we had brunch there instead.

Brunch at Raincity Grill, Vancouver

On Sunday morning, Paul and I sat on Raincity’s deck, watching the world walk and bicycle by while enjoying a delicious brunch of Dungeness crab eggs benedict, fresh berries with yogurt and meusli, and croissants and apricot scones with housemade mixed berry preserves. And coffee, of course — a delicious, foamy latté.

Raincity’s menu indicates that their eggs come from Second Nature Farm, in nearby Langley. I would have asked our waitress about the exact provenance of the crab, berries and other ingredients, but the restaurant filled up quickly, and she was clearly very busy. As Raincity’s approach to food is “the more local, the better,” I think it’s likely that all the food that came to our table — save for the coffee — was produced in the Pacific Northwest.

I think you chose well: brunch is the better meal at Rain City. It was our first choice for the wedding restaurant, but we were daunted by the $15k minimum order! d’oh!!
