When I go to the Queen Anne Farmers’ Market on Thursdays, I always stop by to visit Siri and Jason of Local Roots, our CSA farm. I haven’t bought much from them at the market this year, but only because their fabulous produce shows up our front porch each week. However, I enjoy seeing what they’re bringing to the market that hasn’t yet shown up in our CSA box. And some days, Siri already has an idea of what will be in the next week’s box, which helps me plan my other market shopping. But most importantly, I enjoy talking with both of them — about what’s happening on the farm, about how they like to cook the food they grow, and most recently, about chickens.
Here’s what we found in our box today:
- Bunch of sweet carrots
- Fennel bulb
- Bunch of scallions
- Lettuce
- A tomato!
- Potatoes! Beautiful purple potatoes!
- Sprigs of basil
This week, everyone picked up their veggies! (Confession: I would have been happy to have double the produce, as my parents, my sister and our nephews are coming to visit from Texas tomorrow.)

Happy relativity! Bring them by the market on Thursday and show off what you (with a few neighbors) have wrought.
Have fun with the purple potatoes! I had a difficult time with them at first when we got them last year. The mashed potatoes I made looked *just* like frosting. It took some bribing to get my kids to try them, but once they did we were all hooked.
