Last night, I spent some time cleaning, trimming and bagging the produce from our CSA share. As I snipped the carrots from their greens, I noticed this critter, a real standout among the single-rooted carrots in the bunch. I laughed with delight, then tossed the shorn carrot into a bag.
Before shopping at farmers’ markets, I didn’t know that carrots grew any way other than straight down, in a perfect, single-minded taper. (I imagine that any multi-rooted carrots plucked out of an agrobusiness farm field are destined for the “baby” carrot factory.) In the past few years, I’ve seen plenty of twisted and double-rooted carrots, but never one quite like this. To me, there’s something vaguely human looking about this carrot… if humans had tails, that is.
What does it look like to you? Just a carrot, or something more?

I’m not going to say. This is a family blog.
I like the belly button.
I made a bunch last week of all the weirdo carrots – there was one that looked like an octopus, it had so many legs sticking out! They’re my favorites, but so far I can’t convince Mr. Farmer to take them to market.
