Chicken dreams

July 21st, 2008 by Kimberly

I have no idea whether chickens dream, but I’ve been dreaming of chickens. Ever since the coop tour, my daydreams have been of black and white bantams and statuesque auburn chickens, coops and runs and that empty, mostly shady corner of our back yard. And eggs, fresh organic eggs.

I’m not just dreaming. I’ve been eying the bits of lumber and plywood that Paul has insisted we save from previous household projects; I think we already have most of the material for a coop. And our CSA farmer has offered to add the several chicks we would want to their next poultry order.

In a couple of weeks, Paul and I will spend a morning at Seattle Tilth’s City Chickens class. After that class, we will know just enough to be dangerous “have everything you need to know to start raising chickens in your own backyard.” I can’t wait!

I’ve lived next to a neighbor with chickens, for years. My setting may be a little more rural than yours as our houses back up onto a creek though we are in city limits. Lesson 1: Make sure that the coop is impenetrable by 4 footed intruders. Lesson 2: Roosters can crow off and on, all day long. Think long and hard before you add a rooster to the mix.

I was startled by the photo. I blurted out, “Oh my!” Good luck with the fresh eggs.

Oh I’m green! I went to a chickens class last month and my husband finally said yes. We are allowed to keep chickens where I live but the restrictions on locating the coop put it in the middle of our very small yard. :( I’m trying to figure out a way around it which entails bribing a neighbor, I think.

I wonder if they have a class like that in Spokane? I dream of having a coop too, though it is still just a dream for me (living in a townhouse and all.)

    Have fun at the class!

The best lessons in raising chickens is by experience. I started raising chickens two years ago in a subdivision, starting with 2 hens and a rooster. Now I have 5 new baby chicks, 5 two-month old chicks, and a hen sitting on four more eggs due to hatch.

It is very addicting! Beware and have fun!
