Our second CSA box from Local Roots was waiting on the front porch when I got home from work. Today’s box contained:
- A bunch of mustard greens
- Mystery lettuce #1 (in the middle: thick, deeply lobed leaves, almost chewy, neither bitter nor sweet)
- Mystery lettuce #2 (on the right: dappled with burgundy, romaine texture, slightly bitter)
- Frisée
- Small pink radishes (with greens)
- A bunch of curly garlic scapes
Such beautiful lettuces seemed to me as fit for a vase as for a salad spinner. None of my vases were large enough, so I found a basket in which to arrange my lettuce bouquet.

Gorgeous greens and suspiciously tidy kitchen. You cook in there? I’m guessing your deep-lobed lettuce is oakleaf and the freckled one is the heirloom romaine called Freckles. Which reminds me of that Gerard Manley Hopkins poem: Glory be . . . for dappled things . . . all things strange . . .
How are those the radishes?!
The speckled lettuce is called “Flashy Trout’s Back” – it’s a new variety derived from the Austrian heirloom lettuce called Forrelenschluss.
The oakleaf is called “Italienischer” and my sources tell me it is a German variety whose name means “Italian-style”.
Enjoy!
