Today I made a decision that will change my life… sometime next month. Because I don’t blog about the details of my job, I’m not going to tell you more than that.
Today I got some great news. My father will be the 2008 recipient of one of the American Institute of Architect’s highest honors, the Edward C. Kemper Award for service to the profession. Yay, Dad! He’ll receive the award at the AIA’s convention in May. Hooray! We’re going to Boston!
Today I read an article that made me so mad I could spit. If the city council of New Orleans allows it, the Department of Housing and Urban Development will begin bulldozing several of New Orleans’ public housing projects this weekend. And they’re planning to replace the buildings, some of which are WPA-era, high-quality construction that could be restored, with this sort of shoddily built, poorly designed crap.
Did I say three things? I guess I’m done, then.

What’s an appropriate image to represent a life-altering decision, an honor to one of the greatest guys I know, and ongoing horrors in New Orleans? Hmmmm…
How about a little slice of still life from this architect’s house? The board game is called Ringgz. Paul maintains — and correctly so — that I bought it because of the colors. Also the concentric circles, and the wood construction. The game is arranged on a cherry and iron coffee table from McKinnon Furniture, my favorite (woman-owned) local furniture store. (The game doesn’t spend all its time on the table; if it did, kitties would soon remove its pieces. Really.) Beyond the table, you can see a few of the little rectangles woven into our rug.

That game looks like fun and is asthetically pleasing at once- I love it. We alwats try to give a new family game at Christmas so I’m going to link to that and then your furniture person, just for the pleasure of that. I have a few lovely pieces of furniture but I’m on furniture hold until I find the final small dream home of this lifetime- probably about 5-7 years from now. I think wood and metal, esp. this cherry with black, are beautifully suited.
Hearty congratulations to your father- what a life time achievement, indeed. What a wonderful gify for the two of you to share, as well. About New Orleans- I clicked back to the earlier post link, too. I’m thinking I know who they have for architects, as I recently visited another of their major efforts: Epcot. Looks like that, post up Friday
And the biggest mystery of the day- we have to wait, huh? I’m eager to hear…
