Weather

November 26th, 2007 by Kimberly

pink sunlight

I spent much of last week curled up in an armchair, nursing my sore throat with hot tea and orange juice, watching the weather outside. It’s November in Seattle, so statistically, that weather should have been the windy, wet sort. However, a band of high pressure parked itself over western Washington last Wednesday, and stayed around until yesterday, so we had an entire long weekend of crisp, clear, cold days. Perfect weather for taking walks, planting bulbs, or raking leaves. I wanted to rake up all the tiny, heart-shaped yellow leaves covering our back yard. At times, I could hear our neighbors raking their leaves, and I hated feeling too sick to join them.

I was not too sick to follow our friend Phil up the stairs late Friday afternoon when he said you have to see this light. I was glad I did. The late afternoon sunlight was pink — a pale, seashell pink! — against our next door neighbors’ house.

Today, to quote Winnie-the-Pooh, it rained and it rained and it rained. And tonight, it’s snowing in the passes east and north of here. On this day last year, I was singing Let it Snowbecause it was. I’d love to conjure up some snow on our hill, but not until I’ve raked up all those leaves.

What lovely light. Wow! Now, your pictures alone make me want to move to Seattle … and cuddle your cats.

It was another lovely day today. And I hope your throat is on the mend, my dear.

Try hot grapefruit juice next time; you’ll be amazed. I learned this tip from early music soprano goddess Ellen Hargis over dinner one night in Chicago. Who would know better how to pamper a sore throat than a singer?
