Today’s forecast was for rain, and as I drove to the farmers’ market this morning, a few drops splashed onto my windshield. By the time I walked into the market, however, the sun was finding small holes in the cloud cover; pale fingers of light reached through to touch produce and people.
At the entrance to the market, a pile of pumpkins and wreaths surrounded a poster reading “Eat Local for Thanksgiving 2007 – Take the pledge today.” This local eating initiative is the work of Puget Sound Fresh, a consumer education program for local foods and farmers.
After I’d finished shopping, I stopped by the Puget Sound Fresh stall to take the pledge, which I assumed would be to eat primarily locally-raised foods for Thanksgiving dinner. But no, the pledge read: I pledge to include at least one locally grown food on my Thanksgiving table this year. One locally grown food? I smiled. Yes, I can do that.
Will there be locally grown food on your Thanksgiving table this year? (It’s easier than you might think.)

At the very least, there will be an apple pie made with apples from the backyard. Eating local food is pretty easy here in the San Francisco Bay Area. I am glad I live here.
