Surprise! No cat pictures today. Instead, we pay a visit to Duke, one of the farm dogs at Skagit River Ranch. If you visit the ranch (more on that later), Duke will likely greet you at your car, his plumed tail wagging, a rakish grin on his lopsidedly handsome face.
When you walk down toward the river, Duke will amble along with you, waiting patiently when you stop to pick a handful of sun-warmed blackberries from the brambles lining the path.
At the river, Duke is ready to play. The wide, sandy shoreline of the river — a beach, really — is littered with driftwood large and small. Find a stick, any stick. Long stick, short stick, straight stick, forked stick; it doesn’t matter to Duke, as long as it’s a stick. Throw the stick anywhere — straight up in the air, along the sandy shore, out into the river — and Duke is after it. He will retrieve that stick, bring it back to within a few feet of where you’re standing… and then chew it in half. Perhaps one half is long enough to be thrown again, and if not, pick a stick, any stick…
We’ll be hanging with a different crowd this week aboard the Friday Ark.

Nice post. Is Duke an Australian Shepherd? One of the best dogs we ever had was. He was sliver and gray, with one brown eye and one blue.
