Janeen’s rules of the farmers market may have been written for Port Townsend, but I think those rules could be applied to other farmers markets with little or no revision. This past Sunday, many of the men at the Ballard Farmers Market followed Janeen’s third rule: “There will be lots of good looking guys there. They will have at least one of the three: a beard, a bicycle helmet, kids with them.” More than beards or bike helmets, this Sunday I noticed the kids, wandering the market with their fathers or grandfathers.
Most of the musicians who play the Ballard Farmers Market choose a spot along one of the sidewalks, set up their cases/hats for tips, and let the people come to them. The best of them are soon surrounded by dancing children and their smiling parents. This musician took a different tack. Standing in the middle of the street with only his sax, he played to one towheaded child. The tune was simple and hypnotic; the musician’s focus on the boy complete. The child had eyes and ears only for the show in front of him, but he kept one hand firmly planted on his Dad’s chest.
(And, yes, there was produce, too.)

I’m not a radish fan, but those look good enough to eat. I love the name “Easter Egg Radishes”. Think Mel could use these for the next Easter Egg hunt? Love you, Barbie.
