When I was a little girl, the first day of December was an exciting day. On December 1, my sister and I were finally allowed to open the first window on our Advent Calendar. I loved the brightly-colored paper calendars, with their tiny seasonal illustrations behind each numbered window or door. I loved prising open the little pre-cut windows, feeling the snap as the bit of cardstock holding the window closed broke, folding the window out to reveal the surprise. I loved the way that the light came through the tissue paper on which the surprises were printed, making them stand out from the main scene on the calendar. And I loved counting the still-closed windows, counting the days yet to come, knowing that, as we opened each window, Christmas was one day nearer.

Some advent calendars have chocolates behind their little windows. For Day 1 of my Holidailies online advent calendar, a grapefruit truffle from Zen Boy Chocolates. It was delicious.

Max and Reed snapped open the first window of their advent calendar yesterday. Lovely tradition. I hope they remember it fondly, too.

Yesterday Iris opened the first door on her first advent calendar (she’s almost three, just old enough). I showed it to her on Thursday and told her we would open it after I got home from work on Friday. When I opened the door Friday afternoon she came running down the hall shouting, “Now we can open 1!”

I was one of six children, so I got to open a door every sixth night–oh, did we ever keep track of whose turn it was.

Does this picture mean that you have a chocolate advent calendar this year? Are the treats really there to really eat?
Nyssa has one with little puffy characters having velcro backs. The last one is the Baby Jesus in a manger. All together it forms the Nativity.
Alas, it too is in storage.
