After a very busy week, culminating in a workday that lasted until 10:00 last night, today was a day of rest. Except for a rehearsal with my band for an upcoming January gig, I stayed home.
I finished reading blogger Julie Powell’s Julie and Julia, which just goes to show where blogging can get you, if you are talented and lucky and a wee bit obsessive. Then I picked my new copy of Dorie Greenspan’s Baking: From my Home to Yours, opened to a random page, and began to read. Greenspan’s writing is engaging, and the book’s recipes and photos so mouthwatering that I got up out of my big comfy chair and — strike that. I contemplated baking something. I wanted to bake something… but there was a cat on my lap. Eventually, when the cat was done with my lap, I started my third loaf of no-knead bread. That took about 10 minutes, but only because I had to open the bag of spelt flour that I used for 1/3 of recipe’s flour. I haven’t baked with spelt flour before, so this is an experiment. After mixing up the dough, I went back to my big comfy chair. There was more reading, and perhaps a bit of napping. I wasn’t even the tiniest bit obsessive today.
Tomorrow: the farmers market, coffee with Janeen, and the quest for a Christmas tree.
As soon as we have a Christmas tree, this charming little scrap metal ornament will be hung somewhere near its top.

I love ornaments. In Columbus, MS we had a little sandwich shop with gift shop attached. My friend always had the most unique ornaments each year. I was always there bright and early the day after Christmas to stock up. The last few years at the lab I gave the employees an ornament for the holidays. They got their bonuses from the company but a special ornament from me. The funny thing was they started keeping them and hanging them at their work area rather than on their home trees. It really made the place festive. Now they have been dispersed, the company dismantled a lab that had been there for thirty years in just three. Doors closed for good the last of October.
