Kitchen Transformation: In which Kimberly squeals like a dophin

November 4th, 2006 by Kimberly

I am not, as a rule, given to jumping up and down, or yelling, or other excited outbursts.

However, last night, when I arrived home from work and walked through the back door into the kitchen, I was overcome by excitement, and I made some, umm, sounds. Sounds that I imagine must’ve frightened the McKittens. Sounds at a pitch that no human being over the age of eight should rightly be able to make. Friends, I confess to you now: I squealed. Repeatedly. Until Paul came into the kitchen and shut me up hugged me.

4002-squeeeee

Yesterday afternoon, Bob the Builder and his helper moved our refrigerator from its temporary home in the dining room to its perfectly-sized cabinet opening in the kitchen. And they installed the gas range that has been in our garage lo these many months. The kitchen now looks much as it will when everything is finished, and it’s beautiful, and I can’t quite believe that it’s almost done. We had been planning this kitchen for a couple of years before Paul’s second cancer diagnosis, and we waited two and a half years after his surgery to build it. Is it any wonder I squealed?

I imagine you’re waiting to hear what we had for dinner last night, what we chose as the first meal cooked on the new range. I wish I could tell you, but that meal hasn’t happened yet. You see, our new range - a discontinued model we bought at a deep discount - is factory-adjusted for an elevation of 8000 feet. Aspen, Colorado’s loss is our gain. Or will be Tuesday, when the service technician comes out to adjust our range to work 7550 feet lower than its original setting.

So it’s going to be a big night on Tuesday. I can’t wait to see that blue gas flame. And with any luck, we’ll be looking at a new, blue Congress, too.

That kitchen looks out of this world. It’s amazing. Someday, hopefully, I will have a beautiful kitchen like this one!

    Very nice.
I was trying to understand what is under the counter on this side. It looks as if it might be something that swings out.

Thanks, D, I hope you will, too.

Bill, that’s a radiator in the little alcove under the counter. One of the reasons we bought our house is that it still has the original radiators (though we have replaced the boiler with a modern, high efficiency model). The kitchen may have had a radiator at some point, but if so, it was removed in a previous remodel. This modern German radiator should keep our little breakfast nook toasty warm on cold mornings. (We’ve had a couple of 32 degree nights already this fall.)

    Kimberly,

Congratulations! it looks great! The tile work shown in yesterdays post is very well done. You and Paul should be proud of yourselves for learning a craft of this difficulty. We look forward to seeing the finished product in about three weeks.

Now that is a squeal-worthy kitchen if ever there were one. It looks beautiful–can’t wait to see the photos of your first meal and of the kitchen once everything is in place. I’ll bet the McKittens have overcome the noise and are probably gazing in awe at the new fridge.

Oh yes! I would squeal too. I’m jealous — that’s a gorgeous kitchen, my dear.

It is splendiforous, Kimberly. I love it. The light fixtures are great-love the little bit of red. The tile looks so cool; it is all good. Good, good, good.

    Kimberly,

I’d love to come for dinner. Mind sending out the Lear Jet?
