Everyone knows that cats hear the sound of a can being opened up to a mile away. Our cats also hear, from anywhere in our house, the murmur of the linens when we make our bed. Moments before I shot this photo, when Paul and I shook the duvet cover out onto our bed, there were no cats in our bedroom. No sooner had the fabric settled onto the bed than one, two, three cats appeared and occupied the cover.
Sasha, Sergei and Lyra spend quite a bit of time sleeping, bathing and lazing about on our bed. While each has a favorite spot or two, they’re generally easygoing about being relocated from our favorite spots. But when we’re making the bed, they will not be moved. Not easily, anyway. It’s as if they somehow become heavier, almost rooted.
Our tactics for feline removal during bedmaking have been developed over several years of living with the McKittens. The most effective is the hammock method, in which Paul and I pick up all four corners of the sheet or blanket and lift it off the bed, suspending the cat in the middle. None of the cats is fond of this, and both Lyra and Sasha will vacate the bedding before it is suspended. Sergei, on the other hand, will usually go along for a bit of the ride before bailing out… and jumping back onto the bed. It’s a wonder we ever get the bed made at all.
Cats occupy the prime spot (of course!) on the Friday Ark. Weekend Cat Blogging pads over to The Hidden Paw this weekend. You’ll think someone opened a case of catfood cans when you see all the kitties at the Carnival of the Cats on Sunday.

Friday Ark #107
We’ll post links to sites that have Friday (plus or minus a few days) photos of their chosen animals (photoshops at our discretion and humans only in supporting roles). Watch the Exception category for rocks, beer, coffee cups, and….? You can find o…
I think they think they are trying to help you make the bed by holding the covers down. Nicky has really gotten bad about that. He jumps and pounces on any sheet that moves. The hammock move seems to work every time. The McKittens are, as always, adorable.
Our cats also enjoy a freshly made bed, but often they prefer to be under the sheets instead of on top of them.
Our cats are domestic gods, too, and enjoy helping with the bedmaking, but the Dude also likes sleeping close to my husband–if I come to bed later, it’s not unusual to see the Dude curled up on my pillow.
I have this picture in my head of the three of them suspended in mid-air by a sheet. Too funny!

Ah, the fluffiness!
They are SO cute!! Guess this happens in every cat household.
Afterall they do say, cats have staff. I’m guessing part of the staffs duties are making sure there is clean linen to lie on…
Also, fresh laundry, preferably neatly folded, in a laundry basket.
Years ago, some friends and their cat, Ms. Wally, lived in my house for a while. Wally viewed an laundry basket as the best toy ever. She wound get under an empty, overturned laundry basket, and scuttle around, making it look like the basket was moving on its own. quite the spooky effect. The cleverest part though- when she tired of the game, she would walk the basket to the edge of the top of the stairs, and walk out from underneath! Leaving the basket for humans to trip over, of course.
She also dressed up in plastic grocery bags-but that’s another story.
PS Wow, check out all the fabulous typos in my comment. Also, I got involved in my story, and forgot to mention how much I like the photo. They have it so covered.
Ahhh, that’s the best place for cats! Your kitties are very cute…

Sergei and Nardo must have gone to the same bedmaking disruption classes.

Purrrrrrrrs,
Sanjee the Cat
They look so content. I’ve had cats that come running when I’m changing the sheets. They like to “assist” me by rolling in the sheets as I’m putting them on! Hey, your bed looks great. I would lay there very contented too!
They look adorable!
What a great photo!!! So sweet.
