I apologize. I’ve been remiss in posting about the kitchen. I’ve spent so much time thinking about the kitchen, and talking about the kitchen, and working in the kitchen, that when I’ve sat down at my computer, I haven’t wanted to write about the kitchen. In under a month, however, the kitchen remodel will be finished, and I’m not going to let things get to that point without telling you about the design process behind this remodel.
Just not tonight. I will, thanks to the magic of digital photography and photostitching, show you how the kitchen looked when I arrived home this evening.
Here’s the view from the door to the living room:

And from the basement door (at other end of the kitchen, beyond the end of the cabinets):

And from the back door (the reddish door in the above photo):

As with any construction project, there have been problems and miscommunications. (Fortunately, most of those have been between us and the contractor, not between me and Paul.) But now that we see can really see the shape of the new kitchen, we’re very excited.
Coming soon to a post near you:

Oooooooh it’s looking good!
Wow! The kitchen looks great! Bright & spacious! Can’t wait to see it with the cabinet doors up. I am sure you are thrilled with the outcome – and can’t wait to get cooking in your new kitchen.
How exciting! I have to come over and take a peek soon.
I wanna see the stove in there. Andthe sink. And the countertops. And jam… . Blackberry jam. To send to Bakerina’s Lloyd. ‘Cuz I’m just that nice a guy.
Better freeze some blackberries soon.
How lovely. How nice to be trained so you can make your own renovation plans. That way you will surely get it exactly like you want. I can’t wait to see the final product.
Wow, you are almost done. I’m looking forward to seeing it completed. It does look lovely and airy and bright. Is that a curved wall you have there?
I’m watching this renovation closely. WE just moved and our kitchen is TERRIBLE and badly overdue for rehabbing. I’m envious that you are this far along! I have the same question: is that a curved wall? Wait, no it’s not- I can see from the other photo. What kind of a stove/oven will you have? I’m cooking on electric and I so much prefer gas. Thanks for sharing these pictures. Keep them coming as you progress.
Philip, Dee: Thanks! We’re really pleased with how it’s turning out.
Janeen: Come on over, neighbor!
‘mouse: I wanna see those things, too. All in good time, my friend. Would you believe that I have blackberries in the freezer? Soon as that shiny new gas range is hooked up, there’s going to be some jam coming out of that kitchen. And did you notice the plumbing stub-out under the range hood? Pot filler!!! For filling up my canner. Now I’ll only have to lug the full canner one way.
srp: The training goes a long way in getting the desired result, but there are always things that don’t turn out quite as expected, especially in old houses.
Lindy: Yes, only three more weeks to go! Seems like just… uh… two months ago (!) that we tore out the old one. No, the wall is not curved; the photostitching program (which combines multiple photos into one wide angle-ish photo) just makes it look that way. And yes, it’s very light and bright – quite a change from the old kitchen.
vicki: Good luck getting settled in to your new home! We lived with our ugly, came-with-the-house kitchen for several years. One thing about waiting a while: the plan that is being built now is MUCH better than the first half dozen plans that I sketched for the kitchen. There is something to be said for living with the space until you really know how you want it to be. After seven years with a horrible late ’70′s electric stove, we are finally getting a gas range!
Wow, you’ve come a long way! My question is: where’s the sink? You’ve got everything but the kitchen sink. (Under what looks like is going to be a window?)
Isabella: Yes, the sink will be under what will – soon, I hope – be a window. The first window that was delivered was the wrong size, so it had to be made again (it’s a custom size to match the two windows on the end wall of the kitchen).
Gorgeous! Can I move in? Or even next door?
Yippee! You are so close! Wish we could be there to break it in with you! Big hugs!
