Remember

Posted by Kimberly under Hurricane Katrina

8 29 2005I remember New Orleans, and all of her people trying to make it home. I remember that the disaster that befell her was predominantly manmade.

And I remember the towns of the Mississippi coast: Pass Christian. Gulfport. Biloxi. Pearlington. Bay St. Louis. Waveland. Gautier. Pascagoula. Ocean Springs.

I remember the lives lost, and the lives turned upside down. And as I remember, Phil Ochs’ words keep me company: There but for fortune go you or I.

Market Report: I miss my kitchen

Posted by Kimberly under Food, Seattle

I know, I know… that title has nothing to do with the market; it’s all about me. But look at this produce, will you? How could you walk past this without wanting to go home to your kitchen and cook?

Something borrowed, something blue(berry)

For Sugar High Friday #22, Delicious Days asks the question: Can you can?

Why yes, I can!

I grew up eating my paternal grandmother’s homemade jelly and pickles. How I wish now that I had learned preserving from her! I’m sure that she would have been happy to teach me, had I but asked. Instead, I am self-taught, and have been making jams, preserves and pickles for only a few years. For the most part, I use the incredible fruits grown in western Washington, available at local farmers markets or from U-Pick farms. One of my favorite U-Pick places is the blueberry farm in the Mercer Slough, just across Lake Washington from Seattle.

blueberries on the bushWhen my parents, sister and nephews were visiting from Texas earlier this month, we went blueberry-picking. Seven people can pick a lot of blueberries in a short amount of time. Little boys (and adults) will also eat lots of berries, but not as many as they can pick. When five of those seven people went home to Texas, over six pounds of beautiful, dusky blueberries remained. I just had to make preserves.

Kitchen Transformation: Golden glow

Posted by Kimberly under A very fine house, Kitchen transformation

paint and floor

Yesterday morning, our kitchen walls were the cool blue-white of fresh drywall primer. This morning, they have one coat of sandy yellow paint. By tomorrow morning, they will have two. Now you know how we’re spending our weekend.

On the floor is a sample of our linoleum, which is scheduled for installation tomorrow and Tuesday. In this photo, you can’t really see the flecks of red, cream and sand mottling the yellow. This pattern isn’t as cool as the original linoleum, but it will be a vast improvement over the flooring that came with the house.

Our new kitchen will have a warm golden glow even on the darkest Seattle winter days.

Feline Friday: Inspector Z

Posted by Kimberly under Cats, Kitchen transformation

You (and almost everyone else) know him as Sergei, but Chez McKitten, we call him Z. Sometimes it’s Mr. Z. The story of Sergei’s nickname involves a modern variant of an old English Morris dance, a rapid forward movement in said dance described by Dave as “surging,” the misunderstanding of “surging” by Sarah, who heard it as “zerging” (and wondered aloud just what “zerging” meant), the laughter than ensued, the adoption by our group of dance friends of the term “zerg” to describe the movement in that particular dance, Paul’s and my application of “zerg” to Sergei’s rapid movements, our adoption of the nickname Zergo for Sergei, and its eventual shortening to, simply, Z. Got all that? Good. When Z is bad, he becomes Sergei again… as in “Sergei, get down from there!” Now on to today’s story.

Several days ago, Mr. Z was surprised to discover that two men had arrived at his front door carrying large white wooden boxes. What were those boxes, and why did the men put them in the McKitten living room? They took up more than half of the space! We told him that the boxes were cabinets for our new kitchen. They still took up lots of space.

inspector z: what are these doing here?

Mr. Z donned his inspector’s uniform (which is a tuxedo, just like his everyday suit). Then Inspector Z began to check the boxes. He checked the top of each box. He checked the sides of each box. He tried to check the bottoms of a couple of boxes, but had little luck with that. He did, however, find a way into a couple of the boxes! Everything was very interesting.

inspector z: checking them allinspector z: inspecting the cabinets

Although all of the cabinets were inspected by Inspector Z on the day they arrived, one never knows what might happen while they’re sitting in his living room, so he checks them again - top and sides - each day.

inspector z: there's a place for cat food, so z approves

Don’t worry, Mr. Z. You have only 6 days left to keep watch over the boxes. Of course, you’ll get to inspect them again once they’re installed in the kitchen. Now that should be fun!

Check out all the animals on the Friday Ark. On Sunday, Aloysius will be checking amanuensis’ work putting together the Carnival of the Cats at Catymology.
