To celebrate the one-year anniversary of Weekend Cat Blogging, Clare at eatstuff asked folks to share photos of their cats’ favorite toys.
The current fave Chez McKitten is the ribbon toy; it’s a short wand with a number of narrow, multi-colored ribbons attached. Cats’ color perception is limited, so I know that they don’t see the bright colors as we do, but they sure do love the motion of all those ribbons. All the ribbons were once the same length; some have been shortened by fangs and shredded by claws.
Sasha loves to jump for the ribbons on top of the scratching post.
Lyra will leap for the ribbons and, having captured a few, fall onto her back so that she may thoroughly destroy them.
Sergei particularly loves this toy. He will do backflips jumping for the ribbons. When I swing the ribbons around in a circle, he spins madly, trying to catch them, until he gets dizzy. (I now limit his spinning to only a few rotations, and always “unwind” him in the other direction a couple of times around, too.) I had hoped to capture his spinning on camera, but Sergei was not cooperating. Once he saw the camera, it was all I could do to get him to bat at the ribbons a few times.

Is this a purchased toy or homemade? I bet you could make one with dowl rods and ribbons. Red would be Willow’s color of choice. This would be second only to the big bag of strong catnip that Vicki sent Rhett and the laser light pointer, that mysterious red dot that appears on the floor.
