Watching

March 26th, 2006 by Kimberly

From a distance the world looks blue and green
And the snow-capped mountains white
From a distance the ocean meets the stream
And the eagle takes to flight

From a distance there is harmony
And it echoes through the land
It’s the voice of hope, it’s the voice of peace
It’s the voice of every man

From a distance we all have enough
And no one is in need
There are no guns, no bombs, no diseases
No hungry mouths to feed

From a distance we are instruments
Marching in a common band
Playing songs of home, playing songs of peace
They’re the songs of every man

God is watching us
God is watching us
God is watching us from a distance

From a distance you look like my friend
Even though we are at war
From a distance I can’t comprehend
What all this war is for

From a distance there is harmony
And it echoes through the land
It’s the hope of hopes, it’s the love of loves
It’s the heart of every man

It’s the hope of hopes, It’s the love of loves
It’s the song of every man

– Julie Gold

Sentimental idealist that I am, I have loved this song since I first heard Nanci Griffith sing it some 18 years ago. I cry every time that I hear it, but never so much as when I heard it today, as accompaniment to a video of New Orleans’ Ninth Ward shot from the window of a car driving its streets.

If God is indeed watching us, what must She be thinking?

The damage was so widespread and overwhelming, it almost seems impossible to take care of. I remember a large F5 tornado that went through Wichita Falls, Tx back in ‘80 or ‘81. The swath of damage was significant and complete but not even a hundredth of the damage from the hurricanes and it took years for them to rebuild. One built the house undergound with only the garage above ground. I remember one slab that was never rebuilt. The job in Mississippi and Louisiana is so overwhelming.

Nyssa’s friends in Pass Christian have a similar problem with the insurance companiess. They had flood insurance but are having to sue the insurance company for payment. I think the insurance companies could do better as could everyone. I can see how big the disaster was and how overwhelming it is even for the insurance companies.

William and Mary had a team of kids go to Mississippi over spring break to work. Nyssa tried to go but the spots were limited. She has put in for a grant to go this summer. One of the church groups there has organized these kids for clean up. She can’t hammer but she is good at moving rocks, trash and such.

S/He is thinking how much S/He loves us and would like us to talk to him/her now. ^_^ Seriously.

So wonderful to see the words to a much-loved old favourite song again! It was 15 years ago for me. And here I was thinking I was pretty much alone in loving Nanci Griffith’s rendition of it… thank you. I will come back and watch the video when I get a new hearing-aid battery later today.
