Five things that made me happy this weekend:
- Our blog-friend-turned-real-life-friend Janeen and her kidlet have found a new apartment right across the street from our house. I can see their soon-to-be living room window from my office window. We’ll be able to wave at each other! And borrow cups of sugar!
- The very talented Jen of Prepare to Meet Your Bakerina fame has launched a new venture. Jam Today is open for business. I have tasted of the fruits of the Bakerina Kitchens, and, damn, are they good.
- Lindy of the wonderfully named and written foodblog Toast has gotten in on March Marmalade Madness, with her very own creation: Kumquat Blood Orange Marmalade. It sounds delicious, and looks beautiful. I can’t see the little slices of kumquat in the marmalade, but I know they’re there.
- The local pub where a friend from my memoir-writing class is the new chef got a nice review in yesterday’s newspaper.
- Closest to home - at home, in fact - Paul’s rose bush is putting down roots.
This post is also brought to you by the letter M, for Michelle, who tagged me for this meme.
What were you doing ten years ago?
I had just moved from Houston to the Bay Area to live with Paul. I had a new job, a new apartment, and a new life with an old love. I was happy, excited, and a bit scared.
What were you doing one year ago?
I was celebrating with Paul the one year anniversary of his (successful) cancer surgery. I was coming out of a serious reactive depression. I was relieved, and still a bit scared.
Five snacks you enjoy?
1. homemade marmalade on toast (no, it’s not just for breakfast)
2. greek yogurt
3. fresh local cherries (preferable from the Alberg truck)
4. sugar snap peas
5. chocolate (the darker the better)
Five songs to which you know all the lyrics to?
1. I’m a Little Teapot
2. Four Strong Winds
3. Once Upon a Time
4. One I Love
5. The Hallelujah Chorus
Five things you would do if you were a millionaire?
1. invest most of it to generate income
2. give more to housing charities
3. hire a landscaping company to redo our entire yard
4. go back to Europe
5. go back to school
Five things you like doing?
1. playing my violin
2. drinking good coffee
3. cuddling with Paul and our cats
4. cooking for my family and friends
5. watching people (and yes, I enjoy eavesdropping, too)
Five favorite toys?
1. our cats’ favorite toy, because their acrobatic hunting behavior makes me laugh
2. Canon Rebel XT
3. 8-lb. sledgehammer (oh, how I love demolition!)
4. preserving pan
5. computer
I tend not to tag people for these; please feel free to take it and run if you’re so inclined.

I’m so very glad you like to cook for your family and friends! Have I mentioned that recently? And roots are very good things indeed.
It was contagious. I can’t see the kumquats either, unless I squint and concentrate, really hard. Maybe not even then. But I can taste them.
Interesting fives. Where do you find the time to answer these things?
I found your website by looking up Grapefruit Marmalade. I can’t believe it’s a pandemic. I thought I was the only suffering from March Marmalade Madness! I had never made any preserves before, but after making Grapefruit Marmalade this weekend, I’m hooked. Glad to have found you.
Four Strong Winds is one of my favorite songs!
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmwah.
Thank you, my dearest.
Greek yogurt! Celtic salmon! Kumquat marmalade! Yum!
Your post on the marmalade made me soooooooooooo hungry and yet I am sooooooooooooooooooooo not a cook, that I went to the local farmer’s market and bought some. Yummmmmmmmmm!
What would you study if you went back to school, and why? Looking forward to just a little bit of marmalade in August, if any is left.
