They don’t make ‘em like they used to

in Cats,One I Love

val25I confess that, when looking for a Valentine for Paul, I picked up every card that had a cat on it. All of them were either sickly sweet or silly, and not in a good way. The card that I finally selected did not feature kittens.

I didn’t see this collection of vintage Valentines, many with images of kittens, until today, but I wouldn’t have selected any of these for my Valentine, either. Some of the cats on these cards are just plain scary, as are the sentiments they convey. Case in point: despite this apron-clad kitten’s message that she’ll “stand a little petting,” don’t you think she looks more ready to cough up a hairball than to rub up against someone and purr? And “stand” a little petting? Not a message that I’d want to send to my sweetheart!

These are some pretty disturbing kitty valentines.
The guy on the left appears to be possessed. As for the one on the right, he’d as soon take you apart as look at you….The center kitty, while combining Music and Cats (!), sadlly appears to be a few bricks shy of the proverbial load.
I’d agree that it would be best not to send these to your nearest and dearest. They seem more in the nature of threats than love notes. The recipient might feel like (s)he got a black rose. Or a fish.

Kimberely, these kitties are kind of scarey–why don’t you make your own cards? You have so many gorgeous photos of the McKittens that you would never run out of resources.

I think Lindy has a great idea. Must put this in my file for next year. It has been really hard lately to find any great e-cards as well. These kitties would certainly have to be put in a drawer for the night. They are VERY scary.

Oh, I’m so glad it’s not just me! These are definitely creepy Valentines. Every time I look at them, I think of the video for “Fish Heads” by Barnes and Barnes. Scaaaaaaary. :)

They are scary. Although, I will admit I am a fan of vintage Valentine’s cards, in fact, I love many things vintage.
