Yesterday: beautiful, tender organic cucumbers, the first of the season. The older gentleman with whom I cleared out most of the basket said that Anselmo’s are the best, sweetest cukes in the whole market.
This morning: cucumbers chopped with red bell peppers and onions, before going into a light brine for the day. I’d never had cucumbers for breakfast before, but these were too crisp and lovely to resist.
Tonight: my first adventure in pickling. (Making pickles is so much simpler and less time consuming than making preserves! Why didn’t I do this before?) The first pickles that I remember are my grandmother’s wonderful bread and butter pickles. I found a recipe for these in one of my favorite canning books, but I know they’re different from my grandmother’s as hers didn’t have red pepper. For the next batch, I’ll see about getting her recipe. Perhaps I’ll be able to make pickles that taste as good as hers.

adn the photos look great!
I hate to say this … pickles rank at the very top of my least favorite food. YUCK!
Thanks for stopping by my blog the other day.
Hi, Michele sent me! And those pickles look delicious!!!
Cucumbers for breakfast! Often, when they’re in season. I haven’t made pickles in years, but you’ve whetted my apetite. I’m off to the market.
“…and then, Kimberly was off to the post office to mail all her fortunate bloggy friends a jar of her Pickle Delight.”
If this sounds too much like begging, well, it is!
I might settle for the recipe, though
I’ve never tried pickling…I think I’m too impatient to actually wait for the food to pickle!
That picture brings back nice memories. When I was a girl, every summer supper had a platter of sliced tomatoes and a bowl of cucumbers in vinegar on the table. I don’t like pickles at all, which is odd, because I love cucumbers. But those are just lovely.
OMG that looks soooooooooooo good!
To quote a mutual friend of ours…
Marry me.
(Paul and Lloyd will just have to understand.)
Hmm….pickles….not so hot on the sweet, but dills make me happy. Dill chips anyone? At last, a mission! At least til all the hot peppers come in and the great salsa making spectacle begins.
